【Qianhui Sharing】Solubilization of lead ions in soil by hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin


    As a heavy metal chemical element, lead has a large amount of storage in soil, and its chemical properties are stable and difficult to be decomposed. It is a potential threat to human health. Phytoremediation is one of the main methods to restore lead-contaminated soil. Total lead accumulation in plants depends on the concentration of soluble lead in soil. However, lead ions in soil can form phosphate and carbonate deposits easily, which limits the ability of plants to accumulate lead in soil.

    Due to the special structure of cyclodextrins, its hydrophobic cavities can form reversible supramolecular inclusion complexes with substrates through non-covalent interactions. Cyclodextrins can not only bind organic guest molecules, but also coordinate with metal ions. They are non-toxic and biodegradable. Within a wide range of pH values, cyclodextrins have low adsorption on soil particles, so they have great advantages.

    The hydrophobic cavity of Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin can select the shape and size of the inclusion of appropriate molecules to form supramolecular complex, thus improving the solubility of metal ions in water. The experiments showed that hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin had a significant solubilizing effect on lead ions in soil, and the solubilizing effect was better when the concentration was increased. Therefore, hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin has great potential as a new chelating agent for phytoremediation of lead contaminated soil.
